Honkai: Star Rail

Honkai: Star Rail is a 2023 free-to-play role-playing gacha video game developed and published by miHoYo. It is the fourth installment in the Honkai series and the spiritual successor to Honkai Impact 3rd, featuring alternative versions of characters from earlier titles in the series, as well as gameplay elements from miHoYo's previous game Genshin Impact. The game features the main character, who is referred to as the Trailblazer, traveling across the universe on a train called the Astral Express to help and connect the worlds while involved in resolving various disasters.

Free-to-play

Free-to-play video games are games that give players access to a significant portion of their content for free. The term "free-to-play business model" or simply, "free-to-play model", refers collectively to business models that ultimately result in the creation of free-to-play games. Games that adhere to free-to-play business models are distinct from traditional premium games, which require payment before use. Free-to-play games are not to be confused with freeware games, which are entirely costless. Accordingly, free-to-play games are sometimes called "free-to-start" due to not being entirely free. Certain free-to-play games have also been labeled as "pay-to-win"—that is, that players can pay to obtain competitive advantages over other players.

Tactical role-playing game

Tactical role-playing game, also known as strategy role-playing game or simulation RPG, is a video game genre that combines core elements of role-playing video games with those of tactical strategy video games. The formats of tactical RPGs are much like traditional tabletop role-playing games and strategy games in appearance, pacing, and rule structure. Likewise, early tabletop role-playing games are descended from skirmish wargames such as Chainmail, which were primarily concerned with combat.

Cross-platform play

In video games with online gaming functionality, cross-platform play, also called cross-compatible play or cross-play, describes the ability of players using different video game hardware to play with each other simultaneously. It is commonly applied to the ability for players using a game on a specific video game console to play alongside a player on a different hardware platform such as another console or a computer. A related concept is cross-save, in which the player's progress in a game is stored in separate servers, and can be continued in the game but on a different hardware platform.

miHoYo Co., Ltd. is a Chinese video game developer founded in 2012 and headquartered in Shanghai. The company is best known for developing popular gacha games, including the Honkai series, Tears of Themis, Genshin Impact, and Zenless Zone Zero. Beyond video games, miHoYo has diversified its output, creating various products such as animated series, novels, comics, music, and merchandise.

Strategy video game

A strategy video game is a video game genre that emphasizes strategic or tactical planning and decision-making, often involving the indirect control of multiple units and the management of limited resources, rather than the quick reflexes typical of action games.

Unity (game engine)

Unity is a cross-platform game engine developed by Unity Technologies, first announced and released in June 2005 at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference as a Mac OS X game engine. The engine has since been gradually extended to support a variety of desktop, mobile, console, augmented reality, and virtual reality platforms. It is particularly popular for iOS and Android mobile game development, is considered easy to use for beginner developers, and is popular for indie game development.

Role-playing video game

Role-playing video games (RPGs), also known as computer role-playing games (CRPGs), comprise a broad video game genre generally defined by a detailed story and character advancement. Role-playing games almost always feature combat as a defining feature and traditionally used turn-based combat; however, modern role-playing games commonly feature real-time action combat or even non-violent forms of conflict resolution. Furthermore, many games have incorporated role-playing elements such as character advancement and quests while remaining within other genres.
