Viceroy
The viceroy is a North American butterfly. It was long thought to be a Batesian mimic of the monarch butterfly, but since the viceroy is also distasteful to predators, it is now considered a Müllerian mimic instead. Scientific Name: Limenitis archippus Range: Most of North America Size: Wingspan 5–8 cm Status: Common ID Notes: Orange-and-black with white-spotted black borders — mimics Monarch, but smaller and with a BLACK LINE crossing the hindwing veins. Behavior / Notes: Müllerian mimic of monarch — both are unpalatable. Caterpillar mimics bird droppings.
