Red-banded Hairstreak

The red-banded hairstreak is a butterfly native to the southeastern United States. It feeds on fallen leaves of sumac species and other trees. It is 0.9–1.25 inches (23–32 mm) in size. It lives near coastal areas. Scientific Name: Calycopis cecrops Range: Southeastern U.S. Size: Wingspan 2.5–3.5 cm Status: Common ID Notes: Underside gray with a bold red-orange band; small tails and 'false head' on hindwing. Behavior / Notes: Larvae feed on fallen leaves of wax myrtle, oak, sumac. Common in southern gardens.
