It was initially released on SoundCloud on November 18, 2015, and then temporarily released as a promotional recording on January 8, 2016, with Drup Music. "Ocean Eyes" was solely written and produced by Eilish's brother Finneas O'Connell, who originally wrote it for his band, but later gave the song to Eilish after feeling the song suited her vocals.
