Mourning Cloak

Nymphalis antiopa, known as the mourning cloak in North America and the Camberwell beauty in Britain, is a large butterfly native to Eurasia and North America. The immature form of this species is sometimes known as the spiny elm caterpillar. Other older names for this species include grand surprise and white petticoat. A powerful flier, this species is sometimes found in areas far from its usual range during migration. Scientific Name: Nymphalis antiopa Range: Holarctic — across N. America, Europe, N. Asia Size: Wingspan 6–9 cm Status: Common ID Notes: Deep maroon-brown with iridescent blue spots and a cream-yellow border. Underside is bark-like for camouflage. Behavior / Notes: One of the longest-lived butterflies — can live 11–12 months. Overwinters as an adult, sometimes flies on warm winter days.
