Luna Moth
The luna moth, also called the American moon moth, is a Nearctic moth in the family Saturniidae, subfamily Saturniinae, a group commonly named the giant silk moths. Scientific Name: Actias luna Range: Eastern North America from Canada to Florida Size: Wingspan 8–11.5 cm Status: Common ID Notes: Pale lime-green with long, twisted hindwing tails. Each wing has a translucent eyespot. Pink-purple leading edge of forewing. Behavior / Notes: Adults have NO mouthparts — cannot feed. Live only about a week to mate. Long tails confuse bat sonar.
