Hummingbird Hawk-Moth

The hummingbird hawk-moth is a species of hawk moth found across temperate regions of Eurasia. The species is named for its similarity to hummingbirds, as they feed on the nectar of tube-shaped flowers using their long proboscis while hovering in the air; this resemblance is an example of convergent evolution. Scientific Name: Macroglossum stellatarum Range: Europe, Asia, North Africa Size: Wingspan 4–5 cm Status: Common ID Notes: Brown forewings, orange hindwings. Hovers like a hummingbird at flowers in daylight. Behavior / Notes: Often mistaken for a hummingbird because of its hovering behavior, audible wing buzz, and rapid forward darting. Migrates north from southern Europe each year.
