Ebony Jewelwing

The ebony jewelwing is a species of broad-winged damselfly. One of about 150 species of Calopterygidae, it is found in the eastern U.S. and southeastern Canada, ranging west to the Great Plains. Other common names include black-winged damselfly. Scientific Name: Calopteryx maculata Range: Eastern North America Size: Body 3.9–5.7 cm Status: Common ID Notes: Males have completely black wings and metallic green-blue body. Females have smoky-tinted wings with white pterostigma (small spot) and bronze body. Behavior / Notes: Flutters slow and fluttery like a butterfly along slow streams in dappled shade.
