Alaus oculatus, commonly called the eastern eyed click beetle or eyed elater, is a species of click beetle. Scientific Name: Alaus oculatus Range: Eastern North America Size: 25–45 mm Status: Common ID Notes: Large click beetle with two prominent black-and-white eyespots on pronotum (NOT real eyes) that startle predators. Behavior / Notes: Adults click loudly and flip into the air to escape predators. Larvae are large wireworms predatory on wood-boring beetles.
