The differential grasshopper is a species of grasshopper belonging to the genus Melanoplus. It is found throughout northern Mexico, the central United States and southern Ontario, Canada. It is considered a pest over most of its range. Scientific Name: Melanoplus differentialis Range: North America Size: 28–44 mm Status: Common ID Notes: Olive-yellow with distinctive black HERRINGBONE PATTERN on hind femur. Behavior / Notes: Outbreaks can damage crops. One of the most common grasshoppers in central U.S.
