Devil's Coach Horse Beetle

The devil's coach-horse beetle is a species of beetle belonging to the large family of the rove beetles (Staphylinidae). It was originally included in the genus Staphylinus in 1764, and some authors and biologists still use this classification. Scientific Name: Ocypus olens Range: Native to Europe; introduced to N. America Size: 20–32 mm Status: Common ID Notes: Long, black, with very short elytra exposing most of abdomen. Threatens by raising abdomen scorpion-like. Behavior / Notes: Beneficial predator of slugs and other small invertebrates. Folklore associated with the devil since medieval times.
