Blue Dasher

The blue dasher is an insect of the skimmer family. It is the only species in the genus Pachydiplax. It is widely distributed throughout North America and into the Bahamas. Scientific Name: Pachydiplax longipennis Range: North America, Bahamas Size: Body 2.5–4.5 cm Status: Common ID Notes: Males pale blue abdomen with black tip, metallic green eyes, white face. Females striped yellow-and-black. Behavior / Notes: Highly territorial. Common at ponds. Often perches in 'obelisk' pose with abdomen vertical to reduce sun exposure.
