The black carpenter ant is one of the largest and most common species of carpenter ant native to the central and eastern United States as well as eastern Canada. Scientific Name: Camponotus pennsylvanicus Range: Eastern North America Size: Workers 6–13 mm Status: Common ID Notes: Large, matte-black ants. Pale yellow hairs on abdomen. Behavior / Notes: Excavates galleries in damp wood (but doesn't eat the wood). Can cause structural damage when nesting in homes.
