Atlas Moth
Attacus atlas, the Atlas moth, is a large saturniid moth endemic to the forests of Asia. The species was described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. Scientific Name: Attacus atlas Range: Tropical and subtropical Asia Size: Wingspan up to 25–27 cm — one of the largest moths in the world Status: Native ID Notes: Rich red-brown with triangular transparent windows in each wing. Forewing tips look like snake heads. Behavior / Notes: Adults do not feed — they live 5–10 days, surviving on energy stored as larvae. Silk cocoons (fagara silk) used commercially.
