Asian Tiger Mosquito

Aedes albopictus, from the mosquito (Culicidae) family, also known as the (Asian) tiger mosquito or forest mosquito, is a species of mosquito native to the tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia. In the past few centuries, it has spread to many countries through the transport of goods and international travel. It is characterized by the white bands on its legs and body. Scientific Name: Aedes albopictus Range: Native to SE Asia; invasive in N. America, Europe, S. America Size: 2–10 mm Status: Invasive ID Notes: Black with bold white striping on legs and thorax. Single white stripe down center of thorax. Behavior / Notes: Aggressive day-biter, including indoors. Vector of dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and others. Established in NOLA — prolific in tire and container habitat.
